Chris Cunningham show 22.4.10

Recently went to go and see the Chris Cunningham show at the Manchester Opera House. It was a great experience and an opportunity to get behind his film editing techniques. At this stage in my design process i have gathered my footage, and am ready to dive into editing.

I saw this experience as an opportunity to take some notes and get some inspiration from different areas and open my mind to the possibilities of editing my footage. I know Chris Cunningham from the work he has done on music videos (e.g. Madonna, Bjork) especially on the Aphex Twin videos. In these videos i found that Chris uses the time remapping effect to slow down/speed up the duration of his footage, in order to compliment the composition of the music. This is an effect that i have been experimenting with for my current DO ident project. So the visit couldn't have come at a better time to help me with my research!

Above are some videos i took from the show. There are some perfect examples of flashing images and fast moving footage, edited to create this lively, engaging video. This is the approach im looking for when editing my piece. Piecing together the footage in a lively, fast moving style.

From this show i have taken away new and exciting ideas that i cant wait to start experimenting with. Before the show, my focus was on editing the footage fast, and merging the frames at a constant, repetitive speed. Now my focus is on a much wider scale, im now thinking about using opacity in order to merge two pieces of footage together. Also flickering titles, close up shots of minimal movement, and maybe using the same footage repetitively, in order to establish the message with a more stronger approach.
