Ripped this out of Sky Films Magazine: a little talk on how they render the food to look realistic. Subsurface Scattering helps light the jelly to look edible, and achieves stunning renders like this one from Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. Subsurface Scattering is something new to me, so definitely sounds like something to get experimenting with!Ive researched a bit on this film and become quite obsessed with it! The style of animation is so wacky and exaggerated, yet you really get a feel for the weight texture of the food. I also found this film was produced using the 3D programme called Houdini (random fact!)
I always remember this scene in the film mainly because of its visual appeal. Once the characters enter the big jelly castle, you can really see how much care is taken over the animation. In terms of how the jelly moves to express a realistic feel, but not too exaggerated that it pulls attention away from the characters.
When you watch this scene carefully (characters enter the jelly castle) you can see that the entire jelly environment is animated! You can tell big decisions have been made over how the environment moves - in a way to suit the weight and impact the characters have on the jelly.
